About the English Psychometric Test

The Psychometric Test is given in many languages, one of which is English. This form of the test has English on the left-hand page, and the Hebrew translation on the right, making it very comfortable for Hebrew readers as well as English readers.

The test is written and administered by the National Institute of Testing and Evaluation in Jerusalem. Their telephone number is 02-675-9555, and the website is http://www.nite.org.il/. You can find the registration booklet in university bookstores a few months before the date of the test. The booklet comes with a registration form, which must be filled out and brought to a bank or post office branch with payment of nis 465 before the deadline. For the February, 2011 test, the deadline is January 4, 2011. If you are late, the payment is nis 697. If you change the date of the test, you will pay nis 83.

The English Psychometric Test has 8 sections of 25 minutes each, so it takes 3 hours and 20 minutes to complete. However, plan to be in the testing center for at least 4 hours.

There are three types of sections on the test: English, Verbal Reasoning, and Mathematics. There will be three sections for two of the types, and two sections for the third. No one knows in advance which type will only have two sections. Six of the sections, two of each type, will be used as part of your grade, and two sections will be experimental. The problem is that you will not know which sections count towards your grade and which do not. You must do well on all the 8 sections to be sure of a high grade.

What is tested on the English Psychometric Test?

In the English Sections, there are three types of questions. Sentence completion questions in this section have exactly one blank and are meant to test your vocabulary. There are also "restatements," sentences that must be stated in other ways. These questions test your understanding of the English language. Finally, there are reading comprehensions questions.

In the Verbal Reasoning Sections you will find analogy questions that test your understanding of logic and your vocabulary. There are sentence completion questions with about 4 blanks, which test your logic in reading, and there are college-level reading passages with questions. The most interesting questions on the test, however, are in the logic sections, in which there are logic games and questions that demand pure logical ability. In short, this is a very difficult logic and reasoning exam. Speed is important, as you will have less than one minute per question if you are to finish the test.

The mathematics tested includes arithmetic, algebra, geometry, probability, and statistics. However, most questions are written as word problems. Speed is of the essence here as well, as you will have no more than 1 minute per question.

In all, the Psychometric Test requires a great deal of preparation, and must be taken very seriously. That's where GMAX comes in!
