The GMAT, or Graduate Management Admission Test, is one of the more difficult exams given to prospective MBA students, even for those who were educated in the U.S. It is designed to test a candidate's thorough knowledge of English grammar and mathematics (from arithmetic through probability and statistics). In addition, a person who wants to do well requires very good reading and logical reasoning skills, as well as the ability to write cohesively, persuasively, and to the point.
When you begin to think about taking the GMAT, it is advisable to join http://www.mba.com/ and then, when you are ready to register for the test itself, you will do so on the same site. The telephone number to call for assistance is +44-1-61-855-7219, which is the number in England for Pearson Vue, the company that delivers the GMAT exam.
The testing site is in Ramat Gan, at BSR Building #1, Ben Gurion 2, on the 9th floor. The telephone number there is 03-613-3664. Before you are admitted to the testing room, you will have to show your Teudat Zehut and a current passport. The passport must be signed and both pictures must be current, or they will not allow you to sit for the test. Generally, you must register 4-6 weeks before the test to get a date that is comfortable for you, although sometimes you can find a seat even a week before the date you want. However, it is not wise to leave your test date to chance. Register early.
When you arrive at the testing site, you will be photographed and made to sign a confidentiality agreement, stating that you will not divulge any of the questions you see on the test. The people at Pearson Vue take this very seriously, and some companies were either put out of business or fined heavily for sending their employees to the test, employees who then disclosed to them the questions on their tests. If you find a test-preparation company that says they have “real, current questions,” stay far away from that company, as they may not stay in business for long.
During the test you will be videotaped. Any suspicious behavior will be noted and, if you are caught cheating on the test you will probably find that the universities will not be receptive to your application. The only way to succeed on this test is to study properly.

Studying for the GMAT in Israel
In Israel, there are many companies that give GMAT courses, and state that they prepare you for the GMAT in the best way possible. Most of them teach in Hebrew. GMAX teacher in English. It is extremely important to take your preparation course in English, as you will benefit from the English immersion over the months of the course. When you take the real test, you will be completely used to the English of the test, and will be able to concentrate only on solving the problems, rather than having to first translate the questions and, by doing so, losing precious time.
Many other test-preparation companies require their teachers to prepare their own lesson plans, so that every course the company gives is different and depends solely upon the experience and knowledge of the individual teacher. At GMAX, we have standardized lesson plans that teachers use, so that you can rest assured that you are learning everything you will encounter on the test.
If you can read this article and if you understand spoken English, you can probably take the GMAX course, http://www.gmax.co.il/, which was designed to allow our students to excel on the highest international level. All of our courses are created solely from the questions given in published real tests. No topic of the course is superfluous, and every type of knowledge asked on the test is taught.
The method of teaching at GMAX is very unusual: each lesson begins with the basic knowledge necessary for the topic and proceeds to the GMAT level, when many real problems are given and discussed in full. This is important to the test-taker, as the GMAT is not a test that rewards tricks or dubious strategies. The GMAT is a content-driven test, which means that only those people who are most in control of the concepts, knowledge, and systems tested will succeed. GMAX is built on this philosophy and prepares our students fully.
In addition to the lessons, GMAX gives each student access to the world-famous GMAX Online GMAT course it developed. You can take a demo lesson at http://www.gmaxonline.com/. This online course helps our students review the lessons, enhance their class notes, and refresh their memories.
At GMAX, there are also scheduled sessions for extra help with mathematics and with sentence correction. Many other schools in Israel do not give this opportunity to their students and, instead, tell the students to stop the teacher after the lesson to ask him for help. Since many students are embarrassed to approach a teacher and to ask for personal extra help without payment, questions go unanswered and grades suffer. GMAX wants all of our students’ questions to be answered fully, and therefore assures students of ready access to the teachers according to specific schedules.
The GMAX GMAT course is the first of its kind in Israel, and our students are our most fervent advocates; about half of the students in any class come to GMAX because of the recommendation of a friend.
Note: Here are some answers to commonly asked questions:

Preparing for the English Psychometric Test
Although very few students take the Psychometric Test in English (usually less than 150 per year) GMAX has designed a course to prepare you for the English Psychometric Test. The GMAX course concentrates on the Verbal Reasoning and Mathematics Sections since most of our students are English-speakers who find the English sections quite easy.
This year GMAX is planning to have 3 courses to be sure that everyone's needs are met.
The first course is a very long course, with two short evening lessons per week. It starts during the last week of August, and goes until a few days before the exam. The lessons take about 2 1/4 hours each, and the material is covered slowly over a long time. Many mechina students take this course, as it allows them time to study properly for their mechina subjects as well as for the Psychometric Test.
The next course is a Friday course, which is very comfortable for students and for those who work during the week.
Finally, the courses that meet twice a week for 4 hours per lesson are the regular Psychometric Courses, intensive and high-pressure. These are perfect courses for those who enjoy working diligently for a shorter period of time.
Here is the list of courses, with their time schedules:
In Tel Aviv:
1) 22/8/10-1/2/2011

About the English Psychometric Test
The Psychometric Test is given in many languages, one of which is English. This form of the test has English on the left-hand page, and the Hebrew translation on the right, making it very comfortable for Hebrew readers as well as English readers.
The test is written and administered by the National Institute of Testing and Evaluation in Jerusalem. Their telephone number is 02-675-9555, and the website is http://www.nite.org.il/. You can find the registration booklet in university bookstores a few months before the date of the test. The booklet comes with a registration form, which must be filled out and brought to a bank or post office branch with payment of nis 465 before the deadline. For the February, 2011 test, the deadline is January 4, 2011. If you are late, the payment is nis 697. If you change the date of the test, you will pay nis 83.
The English Psychometric Test has 8 sections of 25 minutes each, so it takes 3 hours and 20 minutes to complete. However, plan to be in the testing center for at least 4 hours.
There are three types of sections on the test: English, Verbal Reasoning, and Mathematics. There will be three sections for two of the types, and two sections for the third. No one knows in advance which type will only have two sections. Six of the sections, two of each type, will be used as part of your grade, and two sections will be experimental. The problem is that you will not know which sections count towards your grade and which do not. You must do well on all the 8 sections to be sure of a high grade.
What is tested on the English Psychometric Test?
In the English Sections, there are three types of questions. Sentence completion questions in this section have exactly one blank and are meant to test your vocabulary. There are also "restatements," sentences that must be stated in other ways. These questions test your understanding of the English language. Finally, there are reading comprehensions questions.
In the Verbal Reasoning Sections you will find analogy questions that test your understanding of logic and your vocabulary. There are sentence completion questions with about 4 blanks, which test your logic in reading, and there are college-level reading passages with questions. The most interesting questions on the test, however, are in the logic sections, in which there are logic games and questions that demand pure logical ability. In short, this is a very difficult logic and reasoning exam. Speed is important, as you will have less than one minute per question if you are to finish the test.
The mathematics tested includes arithmetic, algebra, geometry, probability, and statistics. However, most questions are written as word problems. Speed is of the essence here as well, as you will have no more than 1 minute per question.
In all, the Psychometric Test requires a great deal of preparation, and must be taken very seriously. That's where GMAX comes in!
